One of the first things the user considers are the ratings and reviews. If they re not good he will not download it. The reason so many top apps are poorly rated is because they mostly disappoint users, in spite of their high ranking, often paid. It is precisely an advantage, when compared to have a better rating

As for the algorythm, like the Coke Recipe, no one really knows it although we guess the ingredients. Ratings is definitely taken into account

Re: Dear Apple, it’s about time for a Game Store

Agree. There are still many 2 stars app in the top rankings. Any body as a rough idea of the ranking algorythm? Is it like 80% of amount of downloads in the last 7 days + 10% according to usage of the app +10 % according to stars?

Re: Dear Apple, it’s about time for a Game Store

Philip we believe apple and google are just not focused on this problem because downloads are just growing and hide the fact there's a pain for users an developers.

_____________________
*Sent from an iPhone 4S*

Re: Dear Apple, it’s about time for a Game Store

The more I read and research this area of app discoverability (I wrote some thoughts myself on how to improve the app store experience: http://www.philterdesign.com/?..., the more I see that making apps easier to find isn't really all that important for Apple or Google. What's more important is that consumers are exposed to lots of different apps, so making things harder to find actually meets that goal. It is frustrating as a developer though as it makes your app much more difficult to find and puts more importance on being at the top of the charts.

Re: Dear Apple, it’s about time for a Game Store

Sounds like a good idea to me.
